Rural Futures Intern – Market Linkage Study

WELL Labs is seeking a highly motivated intern in the Rural Futures programme.

Goal

To improve farmer income by identifying market access challenges, value addition opportunities, and testing solutions for better market linkages.

Job Location: Devdurga in Raichur district

Timeline: 2nd Dec 2024 to 31st Jan 2025

Objectives

  1. Map out existing linkages to markets and barriers to increasing income – including current approaches to aggregation, value addition, and procurement contracts.
  2. Document pain points and opportunities for value improvement (e.g. grading, moisture management, storage (cold and dry) etc.
  3. Test 3-4 hypotheses on improving farmer access to markets.

Deliverables

    1. Report on market linkages, pain points and potential for value addition.
    2. Pilot design for testing hypotheses.

    Activities Involved

      The study component should include both primary and secondary data collection for the following information:

      1. Conduct interviews with farmers, traders, and other stakeholders to understand their roles and relationships within the existing market structure.
      2. Research and document the current post-harvest handling practices
      3. Evaluate the potential for increased value addition for specific products to enhance market appeal and farmer income.
      4. Travel along with the farmer and understand the journey after harvesting.
      5. Develop a report summarizing the findings of the analysis.This report can document the pain points, opportunities for value improvement, and potential solutions.
      6. Identify areas where improved market access can be addressed and form 3-4 clearly defined hypotheses.
      7. Design and propose intervention to test the hypothesis for the pilot farmer groups.

      Essential Skills

      1. Understanding of Indian agriculture sector and value chains would be desirable.
      2. Demonstrated experience in conducting surveys, interviews, focus group discussions with farmers and other stakeholders in the agricultural value chain.
      3. Willingness to travel within and outside the district as necessary.
      4. Proficiency in MS office ( Word, Excel and Powerpoint).
      5. Proficiency in Kannada (reading, writing, and speaking) is mandatory.

      Compensation: The salary will be commensurate with the qualifications and experience.
