Green Rural Economy

There are people and organisations doing important work across rural India but these are largely limited to a few isolated cases. We need to address the barriers that prevent these innovations from diffusing rapidly across geographies and contexts.

This is why WELL Labs is working on a consortium-led initiative called Green Rural Economy, which helps development practitioners find the information they need and act upon it. We curate and present knowledge in usable formats and facilitate spaces for collaboration to drive sustainable change across rural India.

About the Project

One of the channels of knowledge dissemination is how-to guides or playbooks. Sourced from leading experts and organisations, these guides must provide a unified view of solutions, and have to be user-centric and actionable. Through funding from the Axis Bank Foundation, our immediate objective is to discover, investigate and document a set of playbooks for ABF’s grantees. We will also test the usability of these playbooks and disseminate them strategically based on relevant themes.

Playbooks is a key part of GRE’s long-term vision of improving access to knowledge and quality content, enabling discovery of expertise, and shortening the time required for project planning. The utility and preferences of users is central while conceptualising the playbooks.

Main Responsibilities

To put together these playbooks, we are looking to hire an experienced graphic designer to conceptualise and create visual playbooks.

They need to create a set of designs that appeal to rural audiences and convey content in ways that are easy to understand and act upon. The ideal candidate should be organised and be able to commit to delivering content for eighteen playbooks at the end of a six-month engagement period (at least 15 days per month). They are required to:

  • Consult with internal researchers and WELL Labs communications team to come up with visual elements that are most appropriate for the specific landscapes and communities that the partner organisations are targeting.
  • Anchor the design workflow component of this project – from establishing the tone and visual language to submission of the final outputs.
  • Develop layouts for different dissemination formats – text or multimedia – and compose playbooks in close collaboration with the science writer and WELL Labs researchers.
  • Conceptualise and illustrate graphics to inform different groups of rural communities, such as farmers, women self-help groups, community resource persons and trainers, about how to implement a certain solution.
  • Ensure collected information captures a process comprehensively so that the final output is actionable and addresses all facets of the problem and possible contingencies.
  • Visit field sites to observe and document feedback from users and partner organisations on the first drafts of the playbooks, and work with other team members to incorporate the feedback received.
  • At the end of the engagement, submit digital versions of all playbooks, assist with prints, as required, and document the process of iteratively designing playbooks to allow for easy replicability for future stages.
