WELL Labs has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the National Water Informatics Centre (NWIC), Ministry of Jal Shakti, Department of Water Resources, RD & GR, Govt. of India.
This partnership is a significant step toward enhancing India’s water data ecosystem. NWIC hosts the India Water Resources Information System (India-WRIS)—a crucial national repository for water data. By leveraging NWIC’s vast data resources and WELL Labs’ expertise in hydrology, remote sensing, and digital innovation, we aim to:
- Expand water data accessibility by integrating contributions from academia, NGOs, and industries.
- Establish data standards to ensure consistency, interoperability, and reliability across platforms.
- Enhance user experience through intuitive data portals that empower researchers, policymakers, and practitioners.
- Drive innovation by facilitating real-world applications of water data for climate resilience, governance, and sustainable resource management.
We thank Secretary DoWR, Ms. Debashree Mukherjee for her guidance, and extend our gratitude to Shri Rakesh Kumar Verma, Shri Anand Mohan, and Shri Raj Kumar Mishra for bringing this partnership together.
As part of this effort, WELL Labs will work in close partnership with Arghyam and NWIC to reimagine India’s water data ecosystem—making it more accessible, interoperable, and impactful for all stakeholders. Arghyam brings its strong expertise in building digital public goods and open data stacks, while WELL Labs will contribute its hydrological sciences expertise and mobilize its strong global practitioner and researcher networks.
At WELL Labs, we are deeply grateful to our institutional supporters and donors, including Rohini Nilekani Philanthropies, Rainmatter Foundation, Bharath Jaisinghani and Ankita Jaisinghani. Their institutional support gives us the freedom and flexibility to pursue high-impact collaborations like this, driving systemic change in the water sector.
