Canal Irrigation in Modern India with Teju Kumar N

Teju Kumar N, Assistant Engineer at ACIWRM, Government of Karnataka, explains how canal irrigation works, and why canals remain central to India’s agricultural water systems.

Teju Kumar N, Assistant Engineer at the Advanced Centre for Integrated Water Resources Management (ACIWRM), Government of Karnataka, joins Pavan Srinath on The WELL Labs Show to explain how canal irrigation works, and why canals remain central to India’s agricultural water systems.

India’s most productive farmlands are often those that are irrigated. Across Karnataka and the rest of India, large canal networks carry water from dams and reservoirs to command areas, helping farmers grow crops beyond the monsoon season and reduce the risks of rainfall failure.

In this episode, Teju breaks down the engineering of canal irrigation in accessible terms. He explains how water moves from a dam into main canals, distributaries, laterals, sub-laterals and field irrigation channels; why canals depend on gravity, slope and contours; and how engineers think about command areas, crop water requirements, duty and delta while designing these systems.

The conversation also explores the history of irrigation in Karnataka — from wells, tanks and anicuts to major dam-and-canal systems like the Tungabhadra project. Teju explains how older canal systems were built, how they have evolved over time, and what canal modernisation means today.

A major part of the episode looks at the modernisation of canal infrastructure, including concrete lining, automated gates, SCADA systems, IoT devices, soil moisture sensors, and the Narayanpur Left Bank Canal system. Teju describes how better control and data can help improve water delivery, reduce losses, and support more equitable distribution across head-end and tail-end farmers.

The episode also discusses the practical challenges of managing canals: changing crop choices, last-mile irrigation, groundwater use in canal command areas, rising demand from drinking water and industry, and the role of Water User Cooperative Societies in ensuring that water reaches farmers more fairly.

Teju also reflects on his own journey as an engineer in the Government of Karnataka, and why water resources management today requires not only civil engineering, but also data, remote sensing, electronics, policy, and direct engagement with farmers.

This episode is useful for anyone interested in irrigation, agricultural water management, public infrastructure, farmer livelihoods, water governance, and the future of canal systems in India.

Teju Kumar N is an Assistant Engineer with the Advanced Centre for Integrated Water Resources Management (ACIWRM) in the Government of Karnataka. He is involved in the development of Karnataka Water Resources Information System (KWRIS), river basin modelling of K2, K8 and K9 sub basin, river basin profile and planning, and remote-sensing based water productivity assessment and administrative works of the centre.
